NEW KITS

2008-2009 Home and Away kit

Quick thoughts, then: I bloody love the home kit. I wasn’t sure about the collar at first, but it’s grown on me. I don’t think it’s quite as good as last years rounded effort, but a V-neck does look pretty smart in claret and blue. The sleeves and the trim are lovely, which is what we’ve come to expect from Nike. The Acorns logo looks great, although it could do with being a tad smaller. Overall, I think last year’s is better, but then last year’s kit completely blew me away with its brilliance; stepping up from Hummel to Nike is always going to have a bigger impact than going from one lovely kit to another.

As for the away kit… hmm. This weekend, Cappsy and I played a game of Pro Evo between two classic Villa teams, thanks to our pal downloading a souped-up option file. 1992-93 Villa (me) comprehensively beat 1999-2000 Villa (Cappsy), but that’s beside the point. The point is, we all took the piss out of how crap that old away kit was, with its gaudy shade of aqua, and how it didn’t suit us at all. Two days later, the new away kit is unveiled, and it’s the same bloody colour!

Granted, it’s a classier rendition, and once again the sleeves and the trim are excellent. But I just don’t like the colour. I understand that the market demands we change our kits every year, and that the away kits need to be distinctive in order to sell them. But really, you can’t go wrong with a white away kit. It suits us, it’s smart and it looks good from a distance. None of those things apply to aqua-greeny-bluey-rubbish. A disappointment.
